While users are trying to upgrade their older version to a newer one, they receive an error at times that makes MS Word inaccessible to be opened. You may even get an error message even while you try creating blank new-fangled document. This error will come with a message that shows that “the macro cannot be found or it has been disabled” and reason is because of the settings of security. In order to get of this error follow the steps mentioned beneath.

  • Go to the location where the file is stored i.e. C:\Users\%User%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP
  • The moment you launch in the folder of start up as mentioned above, keep an eye on Avery dtom directory. And there is existence of any such file then remove/deleted it.
  • Once this file will be deleted, then struggle in order to open a blank file. Hopefully doing this will help you get rid of error message and you won’t receive it any further.

Reason for this error to happen to take place is Global template (Normal.dotm) or Add-In

If you want to get assured about the error that’s bothering you then you must confirm this by starting the MS Word in the safe mode. For doing this, just press and keep holding Ctrl Key for starting Word, if you do not receive any problem with Word while operating it using safe mode, then do as shown beneath to decide which add-in is causing inconvenience and ones its detected simply disable it.

Steps are as follows;

  1. Click file menu, then Options> Add-ins, then hit GO button in the manage: COM ADD-INS
  2. If you find any Add-in, clear the check-box to put them out of action.
  3. Now after finishing this close up the MS Word and the restart it again.
  4. Make addition of single check back every time to the list of Add-In, then resume MS Word and auxiliary keep repeating the steps as discussed above. If the error reappears one more time, we can agree on which add-in causes this error and then we can immobilize it.

Now even if after performing successful repairing of what mentioned above you still face error then switch to another solution to rename Global template (Normal.dotm):

Windows Vista, 7 and above:

  1. depart MS Word
  2. go to start
  3. Insert %userprofile%\appdata\roaming\microsoft\templatesin the search box and then press Enter key.
  4. Then do tight click on Normal.dotm and go to rename option.
  5. Now type OldNormal.dotm and press
  6. Exit the Explorer of Windows
  7. Restart Word

For Windows XP:

  1. Get out of MS Word
  2. Go to start button
  3. Now in the search box, introduce the following command %userprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates and hit ENTER.
  4. Right click on Normal.dotm and go to rename
  5. Type OldNormal.dotm and then press Enter
  6. Exit Windows Explorer
  7. Restart word.

Hopefully the error will be solved after performing these set of commands.
