If by mistake you leave PowerPoint document without saving your presentation then also there is the possibility of recovery of your work, even though the temporary copy has been deleted.
AutoRecover saves the information of presentation with which you are working, in the PPTnnnn.tmp file where “nnnn” represents random numbers that are generated by PowerPoint automatically. When you save your presentation, the PPTnnnn.tmp file is deleted. If you close the file without saving the changes then also the PPTnnnn.tmp file is deleted.

- Click Start button on your windows screen, go to Search option, and then click For Files or Folders.
- In the Search Results dialog box, under Search for files or folder type ppt*.tmp, and then click Search Now.
- If you find file that matches the search criteria then make a right-click to the file, and then click “Rename” option. You can give any name to the file, but the extension must be “.ppt”.
- To open the renamed file in PowerPoint makes a double click on it. If it is the file that you want to recover then click Save As option on the File menu, select the folder where you want to save it, and then hit to the “Save” option.
NOTE: If you receive any error message while attempting to open the file, then it’s clear that presentation cannot be recovered with this method.
Other option to get the unsaved file back is by finding the Temporary Files
Whenever you work with new file a temporary file is also created with that. This can be either in the windows temp directory, in “C:\ Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Microsoft”. If the file is saved on a network drive then it temporarily created there.
In the name of the temporary file squiggly line “~” follows by the letters. These are perfect way for finding some lost info. There are so many others way to get back the recovered ones but these are the ones most likely to contain data.

If you are searching the temp files for PowerPoint then the naming convention is pptxxx.tmp (where xxxx is a number) and they are saved by default in “C :\ Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp” or on Windows 7/Vista. “C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Temp”.
