How to Fix Error “Cannot connect to the configuration database”? – SharePoint Database Repair Blogs

Causes of “Cannot connect to the configuration database” Error:

This error may occurs when

  • IIS (Internet Information Services) is configured to execute in IIS 5.0 isolation mode.
  • Related SQL database gets unable to run.

Method 1: Confirm that the SQL database is running

  1. Go to the Start->Programs->Administrative Tools->Services.
  2. From the list search for the MSSQLSERVER service.
  3. Check the Status column if the value is Started then there is no problem with the database server and it is running. But if you found the Status column empty then it is sure that database server is not running.

To start the database server, right-click on the MSSQLSERVER service and click on the Start

Method 2: Confirm that IIS is not executing in IIS 5.0 isolation mode

  1. Go to the Start->Programs->Administrative Tools-> Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  2. Right click on the server name, and then expand the local computer.
  3. Right-click on the Web Sites and then check Properties.
  4. On the Service tab, uncheck the Run WWW service in IIS 5.0 isolation mode check box, and select OK.
  5. To start the WWW service click Yes.
  6. Go to the Start-> Programs-> Administrative Tools->Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  7. Open the Web Sites folder.
  8. Open the properties of virtual server that is running Windows SharePoint Services 2.0.
  9. Click Home Directory.
  10. Note all the information that is present in the Application name box and then click Cancel.
  11. Open the properties of Application Pools
  12. Click on the Identity tab.
  13. Note the entire information of Application pool identity pane, and click Cancel.

Method 3: Also check that the related account used by the application pool has the necessary permissions to the SQL Server database

To check that this account has the necessary permission for SQL Server database

  1. Go to the Start-> Programs->Microsoft SQL Server->Enterprise Manager.
  2. In the left panel, double-click on the Microsoft SQL Servers, and then double-click on your SQL server group.
  3. Open your server by double-clicking on your server.
  4. Open security by double clicking on Security.
  5. From the left panel, click Logins.
  6. From the right panel, double-click the user that you noted in step 8 of the preceding process.
  7. From the SQL Server Login Properties dialog box, click on Server Roles.
  8. Check the Security Administrators and Database Creators check boxes, and click on Database Access.
  9. Under the Permit column, click on the Windows SharePoint Services database.
  10. Click OK.
